National Columnists Named SBA 2006 NJ Small Business Journalists of the Year

NEWARK, NJ---National columnists Bruce Freeman and Diana Layman were named the U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) 2006 New Jersey Small Business Journalists of the Year. The award is given to journalists who make a concerted effort to increase the public’s understanding of the importance of small business contributions to the U.S. economy.

The award will be presented to Freeman and Layman at the SBA’s Annual Small Business Week Awards Luncheon in April as part of National Small Business Week ceremonies that are held throughout the country.

Freeman and Layman are authors of The Small Business Professor, a Scripps Howard News Service column dedicated to publicizing the passionate, dedicated, and enduring stories of small business owners throughout the United States. In addition, Freeman and Layman use the column as a platform to inspire and inform their readers about the broad range of issues which are important and impact their daily business lives.

"In a time when news media are scaling back space and workforce, it is refreshing to know that there is a nationwide column that focuses on small business," said SBA New Jersey District Director James A. Kocsi. "I applaud the efforts of Bruce and Diana to bring small business to the forefront through their column."

In many columns, Freeman and Layman use the column to recognize small business owners who practice social responsibility in their businesses. They also helps small business owners think about issues, including additional education, insurance, contracts, patents, human resources, finance and the role of government agencies, as well as sales and marketing.

Freeman and Layman will compete for SBA’s Regional Small Business Journalist of the Year Award with other journalists from SBA’s Region II, which encompasses New York State, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. If successful, Freeman and Layman will then compete for SBA’s National Small Business Journalist of the Year Award.

The Small Business Professor is distributed to 450 newspapers throughout the United States who subscribe to the Scripps Howard News Service.
